Port St Lucie is a city that lies in St. Lucie County in Florida. According to the United States Census Bureau, it is home to 231,790 people as of July 1, 2022. As of this writing, Port St Lucie is the most populous city in St Lucie County. It is also one of the largest cities in the State of Florida.

It is believed that the name "St Lucie" was derived from the name of a settlement near Jupiter Inlet. The settlement was founded in 1566 during the Feast of Saint Lucie of the Roman Catholics. Based on history, Pedro Menendez de Aviles established a colony in 1567. The territory was called “Santa Lucia” between Stuart and Vero Beach. Because of various errors, the name became associated with St Lucie Village in Florida, which is north of present-day Port St Lucie.
During the 1950s, the land that is now known as Port St Lucie was largely uninhabited. It was a tract of land at the south of White City. It comprises a fishing camp along the St Lucie River, farms, and businesses.
With the passage of House Bill No. 953 on April 27, 1961, Port St. Lucie became a city. State Representative Rupert Smith proposed the bill. It was then approved by Florida Governor C. Farris Bryant.

The year 2022 marks the beginning of the construction of the Port St. Lucie Historical Museum. The historic "hunting lodge" of the Peacock family will house the museum. Once complete, the museum, along with the nearby Peacock Ranch house, will be part of the Port District recreational site on Westmoreland Avenue.
The Regional History Center overlooks the splendid Indian River in Museum Point Park. The museum started its operations on September 17, 1968. It was under the auspices of the St. Lucie County Historical Commission. The museum offers a foretaste of the groundwork of the community. You will see artifacts and displays from the earliest known residents of St Lucie to the later ones.
